[GIS] Merge multiple GPX to one

I have several gpx files of different routes that I want to join and then import to an route planner programm.

So far I have importet the gpx files to QGIS. After that I have converted them into shapefiles and then merged these shapefiles into one singel shapefile. Then I saved it as a gpx file.

The problem now is that if I import the gpx file to the route planner programm, it only importes one of the inital routes and not the whole joined route.

What did I do wrong?

I have found working with .gpx files in both ArcMap and QGIS, there are a lot of unexpected results. GPS Babel is a free download that I use to join multiple GPS files and create either a shapefile or kml from that (you can also create a single .gpx from multiple files).

Use the ogr2ogr command line tool, that is distributed with QGIS. In Windows, open the OSGeo4W Shell from the QGIS program group and enter

for %p in (path_to_gpx_files\*ride*.gpx) do ogr2ogr path_for_output\gpx.shp -append %p track_points -fieldTypeToString DateTime

The equivalent command in a Unix bash shell would be

for file in path_to_gpx_files/*ride*.gpx; do ogr2ogr path_for_output/gpx.shp -append "${file}" track_points -fieldTypeToString DateTime; done

Make sure the output file (gpx.shp) doesn't exist before, then ogr2ogr will produce one single shapefile from all gpx files with "ride" in it. There are some notes about the ogr gpx driver at http://www.gdal.org/drv_gpx.html .

Do you Python? I've written a partial solution to your problem in Python using the GpxPy library. It should show you how to create your own custom solution. In my case I am extracting the track from a gpx and outputting it to a formatted text file.
