I am using ArcMap 10.2.2 and can't get the measure tool to measure an area. For some reason The option to measure an area is not available for selection. Any ideas of how to activate it so I can measure an area of a polygon shape file?

I would use the following workflow to calculate the area within the classes:
- Reclassify (Spatial Analyst) the kernel density output to whichever classes you are using. By default ArcGIS creates a continuous raster surface for the kernel density output, but reclassifies the legend (which is temporary). Using the reclassify tool will make this permanent.
- Open the reclassified kernel density attribute table and observe the "COUNT" field (Figure 1). This is the count of all the pixels in each class. For example, Class 1 (Value = 1) has a count of 620,063 pixels. Since my coordinate system is UTM, the units are in meters and the pixels are at 1m spatial resolution. Therefore, Class 1 is 620,063 m^2.
- To convert the count to other units such as hectares, add a new field in the attribute table.
- Calculate field (Figure 2)
- Logic check the results by highlighting a class (Figure 3)

Alpheus, I'm not sure if you've already solved your problem or not but I would recommend against converting your DEM to a 16-bit raster. This is very likely to reduce the precision with which the elevation data are stored and can be very disruptive for any subsequent analysis, e.g. flowpath modelling or slope analysis. If your data are currently floating point, and I don't know if they are, then this conversion will also result in a degradation to integer values, i.e. nearest metre or foot. If you are finding seams between your tiles despite all of them having the same display minimum and maximum values, then this could only be caused by a different binning strategy among some of the tiles, e.g. you might be using an equal area stretch or something similar for a few tiles. However, given your problem is mainly with display, you might consider mosaicing your DEM tiles into a single larger raster. That way their colour ramp and display parameters are guaranteed to be the same throughout. There was a similar question to this a short time ago,

That person found that mosaicing was the solution to their problem with creating a seamless display of elevation data.

The data frame was using a geographic coordinate system which does not allow you to measure an area. I changed the data frame to a projected coordinate system which allowed me to activate the area measure tool.
