Can we import a Shapefile from a system which doesn't have PostgreSQL installed (client machine) into a system having PostGIS installed?
I am getting problem with 'shp2pgsql' and 'psql' since both are not recognized on the client machine.
I am trying this using console.
One way to solve this is to create a symlink /Library/PostgreSQL/9.3/lib/liblwgeom-2.1.1.dylib that points to /usr/local/opt/liblwgeom/lib/liblwgeom-2.1.1.dylib.
There are other ways (setting library path environment variables, using homebrew for everything), but this is probably the most efficient. Note that if you do need to upgrade lwgeom, you may need to create a new symlink.
Using PGAdminIII create a database using the template_postgis as a template, this copies all the triggers, functions and tables into a new database. Right click on the databases symbol and select 'new database':
Then you can import data into it. It is probably best to not use the pg_admin user but if you're the only one seeing the database that should be fine. Have a read of Roles and Privileges to see about creating a 'user' or users identity(s).
If you don't have template_postgis in your database then perhaps you can create it (or here) but I found it best (easier) to uninstall and reinstall PostGIS.

Not a command line solution, but since you tagged the question QGIS:
I recommend using QGIS PostGIS Manager plugin which is a GUI for shp2pgsql which allows you to upload Shapefiles to a remote database.
