[GIS] Iterate Through Folders within Folders

I am having some trouble creating a model that will iterate through folders and subfolders. I want to be able to have the top level folder as a parameter and then have the code go through each of the sub folders and complete an action.

I have working code for the action I'm looking to complete and I am able to create an iteration to go through one folder, but I want to be able to go through 18 folders and run my script on every .mxd within each folder.

Here is the model that runs within one folder.

I want this to run through the 18 folders that I have.

Any ideas? I can run this either as a model or a script.

Here's how to find all the mxds in a directory tree using the os module:

import os

for root, dirs, files in os.walk('C:/junk'):
    for file in files:
        if os.path.splitext(file)[1] == '.mxd':
            print 'It is an MXD!'

When faced with a problem like this I use os.walk() which returns all files and then see if the files match what I want by extension, here's an example for shapefiles:

import sys, os, arcpy
InFolder = sys.argv[1]

for (path, dirs, files) in os.walk(InFolder):
    for ThisFile in files:
        fName,fExt = os.path.splitext(ThisFile)
        if fExt.upper() == ".SHP":
            fc = path + "\\" + ThisFile

Change fExt.upper() == ".SHP": to fExt.upper() == ".ASC": and then operate as normal with fc being the full path to the dataset.

The other option is to put all the rasters in manually... or semi manually:

Open a command prompt in your base folder and type:

DIR *.ASC /B/S

Which gives a list of all the ASCII files in all subfolders... if there's too many to select then try piping to a text file:

DIR *.ASC /B/S > ASC_File_List.txt
START NOTEPAD ASC_File_List.txt

Then select all, copy, and paste into the tool.

Something like this should work - just gets a list of all layers in your current map and outputs them to a single folder as shapefiles.
