[GIS] Installing QGIS on Mac OS 10.7. “The GDAL framework is required.”, and yet I have it

what did I miss? I'm trying to install QGIS on my MacBook (Mac OS 10.7). I'm following these instructions: https://sites.google.com/site/eospansite/qgis-installation/installing-qgis-1-6-on-macosx

It says to first install GDAL following these instructions: https://sites.google.com/site/eospansite/installinggdalonmacosx

I installed GDAL but when I come to install QGIS I click on the QuantumGIS.pkg and it opens the install dialogue box but with a warning "The GDAL framework is required."

I know that GDAL is there, I can see it in /Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/ so I wonder if exporting the path didn't work. Anyone know how to check that? Or anyone know of anything else I may have overlooked? Thanks.

Please check the latest version of QGIS KyngChaos installers. They're usually the most stable and up-to-date ones for QGIS on OSX.

I think you exported the wrong path. You mentioned

/Library/Frameworks/GDL.framework/

when it should be

/Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/

Or is that just a typo in your question?

I assume that you use the QGIS version of KyngChaos

Have you installed the required packages ?

The GDAL complete package
....

If you did, the osgeo module is in:

/Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Versions/1.11/Python/2.7/site-packages (or /Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Versions/1.10/Python/2.7/site-packages

And there is a Python path configuration file (.pth) pointing to the module in:

/Library/Python/2.7/site-packages/gdal-py2.7.pth (or /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages/gdal-py2.7.pth)

The content of this file is:

import sys; sys.path.insert(0,'/Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Versions/1.11/Python/2.7/site-packages')

import sys; sys.path.insert(0,'/Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Versions/1.10/Python/2.7/site-packages')

To control, open the Terminal.app and type:

$ python
 ......
 >>> import osgeo
 >>> osgeo.__file__
 '/Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Versions/1.11/Python/2.7/site-packages/osgeo/__init__.pyc'

or the same in the Python console of QGIS

After, in the GDALTools parameters:

for binaries, put: /Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Programs:/usr/bin
for the path of the Python modules, put /Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Versions/1.11/Python/2.T/site-packages (or 1.10)
for the help files, put /Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Versions/1.11/Resources/doc/gdal (or 1.10)

[GIS] QGIS won’t install on Mac OSX, during install says “The Installation Failed.”

http://www.kyngchaos.com/software/frameworks notes that the frameworks are built for Lion, MT Lion and Mavericks.

So it seems that El Capitan 10.11 may not be supported yet.

Perhaps you should contact the maintainer, William Kyngesburye, directly about this issue.

The other download source http://qgis.dakotacarto.com/ notes that 10.11 is untested yet.
