[GIS] Installing GDAL with Python on Windows

Can anyone explain how to install GDAL/OGR with Python on Windows?

I have Windows Vista and I have tried following the information on the website and it does not seem to bind the *.exe files for me.

Can someone describe the process, including links to the files/folders I will need?

I have now tried to run the GDAL setup with minGW, but this has also failed:

GDAL_FAIL

Unless you have good reasons not to, I'd definitely recommend starting with the OSGeo4W installer, which can install multiple different versions of GDAL and their relevant Python bindings. It works great and dramatically simplifies the Windows deployment story. Specifically, you'll want to install pkg-gdal-python, which is within 'Libs' in the installer tree.

Ok plan B! Looks like there is a problem with the maptools.org package that does not include the _gdal_array. Sorry took me a while to figure that our. I tend use ogr and not gdal for the most part so I never noticed!

So to start again:

Make sure you have numpy
Create an install directory where all the final bits and pieces will be located. Lets say C:\GDAL. I'll refer to this dir as
Download the appropriate package from: http://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/#gdal
If you don't have it already get 7-zip, After installing you should be able to right click on the exe and choose extract here. The extract will create two directories DATA and PLATLIB
Copy everything in PLATLIB to
Copy everything in DATA\Lib\site-packages\osgeo to \osgeo

Now its just a matter of altering your PYTHONPATH and PATH environment variables to include your . The following code will do it in a script.

[GIS] Trouble installing Rasterio module for python 2.7 on windows

I finally managed to get past this problem by systematically going through all of the supporting requirements for rasterio.

One of the key things that helped was:

pip install wheel --upgrade

However also, I touched many many of the other modules (upgrading GDAL, numpy, click and Cython ) before finally getting to the point where

pip install rasterio-0.24.1-cp27-none-win_amd64.whl would finally work for me.

I had success using this method, but then also ran into some later problems to which I am now searching for answers!
