[GIS] IDLE (Python GUI) Will Not Open

I recently went through a lengthy process of installing GDAL and think that something may have gone awry as my IDLE is not opening. I cannot edit files in IDLE either. The only thing that works is running the IDLE.bat which then opens the Python Shell. I do have Python 2.7 installed via Arc (thus my installation for Python is in C:\Python27\ArcGIS10.4).

Python Issues

I've tried copying the tcl8.5 folder into the Lib folder. I've cleared the files in my .idlerc folder. Short of reinstalling Arc entirely, are there any workarounds? I can't seem to find much else that helps.As you can see in the photos, my .py files have also lost their default programs even though pythonw is set as the default program.

You can try a repair install of Arc...

I had similar issues with python acting up on my work machine when I was messing around with Python 3. I uninstalled py 3 but the issues persisted. Once I performed a repair install (control panel, click uninstall, select the repair install option) which fixed my issues.

And much quicker than doing a full uninstall and reinstall.

Looking at your posts here and on the ESRI Forums, I think you have some muddled environment settings.

You want to put C:\Python26\ArcGIS10.0 in your system PATH variable, that gets you to the correct executables from IDLE, PythonWin or the command line.

Your PYTHONPATH could be empty. Or, you could just include the 3 stanzas of your Desktop10.pth file: C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\bin C:\Program Files; (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\arcpy; C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\ArcToolbox\Scripts--those paths will then take precedence over the the default search for modules (below the python.exe or pythonw.exe being called).

Finally, since you've uninstalled and installed several versions of Python. At this point, there should be nothing under the C:\Python26 folder except the ArcGIS10.0 folder of the ESRI provided Python 2.6.5 32-bit install. If there is a Lib file there it is a residual of an earlier install and will interfere. It would be a bigger problem if any or your prior Python26 installs were 64-bit.

Also, since you're on 64-bit Windows 7, the Registry path the to 32-bit Python keys are HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Python If you have a HKLM\SOFTWARE\Python, they would be Keys for a 64-bit install. They also would interfere with the 32-bit install.

It looks like you have a similar problem to one I had. Though the specifics of the paths are different I believe that a similar solution can work. See my solution in this post.

What is happening is that it is not just the PYTHONPATH which is read but also the PATH variable. On load QGIS appends the paths of the osgeo binaries to the path, which means they get read last. That means the ArcGIS location is found first and Windows looks no further.

What you don't want to do is muck up your ArcGIS install by playing with the main PATH variable (where there will be a reference to the Arc Python directory). However, if you tell QGIS to reverse the sys.path variable as the first thing it does, it will read the osgeo paths first and ignore the Arc Python instalation. This change is only apparent within the specific Python session (i.e. it has no effect on the actual PATH or PYTHONPATH variables stored on your computer and neither is it permanent, so will be safe as far as ArcGIS is concerned and less dangerous than editting your PATH variable as this could end up breaking Arc with the same problem but the other way around).

Depending on your install, you might want to change my solution to something like (based on what I read in your question):

sys.path.reverse()

If you have used osgeo4w to install QGIS this will be unnecessary, but you could do it anyway as a belt-and-braces approach - it won't hurt). I suspect you will also need to add the lines at the start of the set_qgis_01.py file (I did mine in the GDALTOOLS.py file because that's where my conflict manifested itself).
