I have a shapefile A with a group of polygons, lakes.
Now I want to select the polygons(lakes) that are within a specific distance to a polygon in a second shapefile, B, with the polygon a city.
In other words, I am looking for something like ArcGIS "Select By Location" and "are within a distance of the source layer feature"
I tried Select by Location, and also Select by Radius, but didn't manage to get any of them to work.
Depending on your desired output you can utilize 2 features of the Select by location tool in QGIS (Vector > Research Tools > Select by Location). In the image below you will see the options for 'use selected features only' and 'modify current select by...'.
In your example, first select your desired municipality polygon (from Shapefile B - you can do this manually or through a query) and then select 'use selected features only' when selecting your land cover polygons (Shapefile A) using the Select by location tool. This will result in only those land cover polygons being selected for a single municipality.
If desired you can then append additional selections using the 'add to current selection' option.
The solution is quiet straightforward :
Using the NNjoin plugin i made a self join of the house layer using the distance criterion
the result layer gives the distance between the houses!
a simple query gives all the houses within a 5 meter distance "distance" <= 5
An alternative solution can be to use the v.cluster from the grass toolbox !

One way to achieve this is to first buffer your city polygon and then use the Spatial query plugin with intersect.
Adding a "within a distance of" option would be a nice extra for the Spatial query plugin.
