I have a classification image with only 12 classes. I'm preparing layout using this image. when I add legend into layout page, a lot of empty classes loaded together with these 12 classes. Totally 255 classes added to layout page. Then I tried to delete them in Symbology tab of data Properties window. How to remove these empty classes from legend.
Is there any way to do this?
The ArcMap interface resets the symbology classification to jenks whenever you change the symbology layer, which is kind of annoying. I've gotten around this to make batches of 100s of maps using ArcPython.
First, set the symbology to run off of a field in the attribute table called "temp" or something like that. Tweak the symbology to your liking. Then you will iteratively replace that values of that field using Field Calculator, then export the map:

Just open the Legend Properties, click the General tab, select the layer(s) you want to remove from the legend under Legend Items (you can use Ctrl to select several layers at once) and click the double leftward arrow button, see picture below:
If you only have about 32 layers, it will probably be faster than writing a Python script and define which layers should be kept and which should be removed from the legend.

Right click on Legend rectangle and select properties, legend properties will open. Select items and in the item screen there a block named map extend options. Check the box of (only show classes that are visible in the current map extent)
