[GIS] How to make Geoserver dynamically calculate the bounding box of a postgis backed Layer

I set up a store for a postgis db.

I set up a layer that queries a table.

Geoserver requires that you set the Bounding Box of the layer when you create the layer. The problem is that I don't know beforehand what the bounding box will be, since someone else will be writing on the table in the future.

Of course I could set a huge bounding box to cover all the expected points, but isn't it possible for Geoserver to compute the bounding box at runtime based on the actual data in the table?

Brad answer is spot on. However, there has been a desire to also allow admins to setup dynamic bounding boxes on selected layers, it just needs someone to implement it / sponsor it.

Did you update the bounding box on the datastore page?

If it isn't that then we'll need more details of where you added the data, how you added the data and what errors and messages you get in the log file.

Update

Something is wrong with your data - -10Mil, 5Mil, -10mil, 5Mil is completely wrong if your data is in 4326 (-180,180,-90,90). You may need to check what the actual data in the table looks like.

The easiest way to add a second shapefile to a table is the -a flag (see http://postgis.refractions.net/docs/ch04.html#shp2pgsql_usage)

This is already an old question, but I haven't found many example documenting this on he Web. On GeoServer version 2.5.1 the following should work (it should also work with older versions). :

It doesn't take the bounding box of the underlying layer, but you could retrieve it by using a Selenium script
