[GIS] How to install PostGIS and pgrouting on Windows if Stack Builder fails to connect

I know this has probably been covered and that there are plenty of guides out there, but for the life of me I cannot get pgrouting installed. All guides/how-tos are different or assume prior knowledge.
I'm a QGIS newbie and please assume I know nothing!

How do install pgrouting? And what do I need first and how do I install whatever is needed? Can some helpful soul offer a step-by-step guide?

I've been trying to do this for days. I can get Postgres installed but the Stack Builder will not connect. I am thoroughly confused.

I'm using Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit Service Pack 1, QGIS Lisboa.

I'm now having trouble getting PostgreSQL to install.

I'm not sure if the Stack Builder is honouring the system proxy settings ... and to make life more difficult, we have an authenticating proxy.

I got around the issue by using Fiddler

Run Fiddler, then on the menu Rules, enable Automatically Authenticate

Run the Stack Builder, and set its Proxy to localhost and port 8888. Do this for both HTTP and FTP (the list is retrieved using HTTP, but the packages come over FTP)

As far as I can see you have a layer sitting around whose store has been deleted. This should never happen, did you try to modify the on disk GeoServer catalog configuration by hand? My guess is that the id of the feature types/coverage in the store "cases" do not match the one of the store file itself.

For example, the states_shapefile store.xml has:

states_shapefile true WorkspaceInfoImpl--570ae188:124761b8d78:-7ffd
http://www.openplans.org/topp file:data/shapefiles/states.shp

and the featuretype.xml contained in the states sub-directory has:

FeatureTypeInfoImpl--570ae188:124761b8d78:-7fc1 ...
DataStoreInfoImpl--570ae188:124761b8d78:-7fd9

The featureType/store/id element must match the store id.

QGIS PostgreSQL – Connecting to PostgreSQL with QGIS

You should verify that you can connect using psql. Try psql -U username -h localhost dbname. It should prompt for a password then connect. Run SELECT postgis_version(); to verify that PostGIS is active in the database.

If you can connect but SELECT postgis_version() reports an error, PostGIS isn't installed in the database:

ERROR: function postgis_version() does not exist
LINE 1: SELECT postgis_version();

Other solution:

SELECT * FROM Postgis_lib_version();

If you want also to see the version of PostGIS and the version number of the libraries GEOS and Proj4 just change lib to Full.

If you get the above error, then presuming you're running PostGIS 2.0 on PostgreSQL 9.1 or above, connect as user postgres and run CREATE EXTENSION postgis;. Eg:

psql -U postgres -h localhost dbname -c 'CREATE EXTENSION postgis;'

You might also need to install some of the extras, like the PostGIS topology support:

CREATE EXTENSION postgis_topology;

or the legacy support script, which isn't packaged as an extension and must be sourced:

psql -U postgres -h localhost dbname -f /path/to/postgis-2.0/legacy.sql

If you can't connect to the DB, it's probably a pg_hba.conf issue, failure to create the DB or user, etc. Hard to say without error messages and log contents.
