[GIS] How to Export to DXF and retain elevations of contours using QGIS

I have shape files for a whole county, and have created a base map in Qgis. What I do for my projects is zoom into the area of interest then export to dxf. The same procedure was used when I used Arcgis, however I had to go into the features and create a new feature called ELEVATION and copy the z values from the county ELEV into the newly created ELEVATION. I have tried this in Qgis but I am still not getting the contours on an elevation in cad. I have read some post about entering a code into OSGeo4WShell but the problem I have with that is my contour shape file is for a whole county and is way too big to bring into cad. I also keep getting errors so What options do I have?

When you generate the contours in QGIS, make sure that you tick the Attribute name box. Then when you ogr2ogr (you must use command line - this is not an option in QGIS Save AS), specify the zfield. For example, if your elevation attribute is "ELEV", then your command could look something this:

ogr2ogr -f "DXF" contours-out.dxf contours.shp -zfield ELEV

By the way, if you were searching for this in answers, you would not have found it. I learned this method from this question.

EDIT: I should also point out that the DXF will not have an attribute field for elevation, but instead will be drawn to elevation.

I came across this question, which boils down to your problem. Maybe you can try the suggested tool (dxf2xyz 2.0) to convert your DXF to xyz? The free tool apparently only supports AutoCAD version up to 2002, thus not suitable in your case. However, I found another tool allowing to convert between DXF versions (R1.X to 2018) (including yours). The trial version seems to be full-featured, but limited to 15 uses.

I know it's a somehow cumbersome way of doing something which is intrinsically easy, but you should give it a shot... Use the desired tool to convert DXF to readable formats.
