I want to create a feature layer from a layer (.lyr) file and add it to my ArcGIS map document programmatically. I am using C# and ArcGIS.

I have a layer file and a shapefile.

Once a layer file is loaded, it is the current version as opening upgrades it. The DocumentVersion property exists solely to set a version for save back to a prior version with the LayerFile class.

The actual document version is not written to a layer file. The only version information written is the internal persistence version of the object. This information can be extracted via structured storage but you'd need a lookup of this version number for every possible layer type (and you'd also need to extract the layer type guid to even tell the layer type).

This is what ESRI told me. Of course this uses the ArcPy toolbox. But ArcPy is installed with every version of ArcGIS software (including the runtime engine.) Note that you have to pass the full pathname for the map file and the target package file. In addition, the help warns you that you must set the "Description" for the map file or this WILL NOT WORK. Of course there is no such thing as a "Description" property for a map file. Your file "SAVE" must include: documentInfo.Comments = "Some Comment required."; (Cast MapDocument to IDocumentInfo (or IDocumentInfo2) and set the Comments property.)

For now I'll live with this - I sure hope they decide to provide lower level code in 10.1.1 (even tho 10.1 is trying to abstract more.)
