Is there a way to download a region from Google maps to a PDF or JPEG file? I would like to download as many zoom levels as possible so I can zoom in and out without being online. I need this for practical reasons when I will be traveling to remote China and I need detailed maps of certain provinces/counties.I will be browsing these maps on an iPod touch.

I only need the street information, so only the "map" part of gmaps.

GoogleMaps is now offering 'off-line' mode, so you can do this without any GIS or programming at all. The trick is you'll need Android Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean: A new Google Maps app for smartphone and tablets

The offline maps feature for Android is also no longer available. Instead we’ve created a new way for you to access maps offline by simply entering “OK Maps” into the search box when viewing the area you want for later. Finally, My Maps functionality is not supported in this release but will return to future versions of the app. People who want to create powerful custom maps can still do so with Maps Engine Lite on desktop.

You can load a kml file containing your polygons or create theme dynamically with the help of the Polygon class.

Here is an example of creating a polygon but the simplest way is loading a kml file. Just be sure your Kml file is under the file size limit (which can change at any time).

By default on the given example, I guess fill color is transparent, that's why it is invisible. And it get the highlight color by register events on mouse over.

You can then add listeners to your object on mouseover/mouseout like so :

google.maps.event.addListener(object,"mouseover",function() {
   // your code
});

Here comes an example on polylines but it can be done the same way on polygons.

1st. You will likely have to go province by province, as provinces usually manage spatial data like that and may have to pay for it. For Saskatchewan you might find what you're looking for here or here.

2nd. You will need to then convert the data to kml and upload it to fusion tables.

3rd. Query out what you want to display in fusion tables and then show it on a google map.

There are many ways to do steps 2 and 3 but step 1 will be the hardest.
