[GIS] Format MODIS HDF to Geotiff in MRT

Am using Modis Reprojection Tool (ModisTool) on MODIS LST data (MOD11A1) to
convert to GeoTiff format.

When I run it I get this error message:

Error: OpenGeoTIFFFILE: Opening Output Image File
Unable to open C:\(directory)\ ..LST_Day_1km.tif: Cannot open.

What is the correct syntax to use? Is there some way to debug this error?

I just ran into the same problem, and somehow figured out the solution (in my case, at least): Make sure that there are no spaces in the path or name of your new file. For some reason, the MRT changes them to underscores instead of using quotes or whatever to keep them as spaces.

As I said, this worked for me (MRT 4.1, Mac OS X 10.8.2).

How about using GDAL? It is available via FWTools (easier install) on Windows, via apt-get on Ubuntu, and via a binary for OSX.

Once you have GDAL just go ahead and use:

gdal_translate -of JP2OpenJPEG <input> <output>

gdal_translate -of JPEG2000 <input> <output>

The above command uses the built in JP2 format conversion. ECWJP2 or Kakadu might give you better results but they require a license.

HDF4 support is not available in GDAL by default. If you're using the GDAL binaries and python libraries from GISInternals, these do not have HDF4 support compiled in (at the time this answer was originally posted in July 2013, however HDF4 support was added to the GISInternal GDAL build in Nov. 2013). HDF4 support is compiled in the OSGeo4W GDAL binaries.

You can test if you have HDF4 support with the gdalinfo command: gdalinfo --format hdf4

You can also batch the MRT from within your python script using the subprocess module, see the "Command Line Interface" section of the MRT User Manual.
