QGIS – Creating Variable Distance Buffers

I would like to create variable distance buffers for some points in QGIS 3.4.

I have seen in previous posts that there used to be a tool for this in older versions of QGIS, but that this tool wasn't continued in the following update.

Is there a way to create buffers based on information from a column of the attribute table?

It's now part of the "Buffer" tool. You can now enter a buffer value in the distance text box or you could click on the button on the right of the distance text box to set a variable distance buffer (by selecting a numerical field or with an expression)

After selecting the features you want, go to Layer -> Save as -> Under Encoding check 'save only selected feature'. A shortcut to the above process right-click the layer you selected features from, then go to save as -> Under Encoding check 'save only selected feature'

Looks like you're only storing the geometry field in the polygons_buffered GDF. You can apply the buffer function directly to the original GDF and either modify the geometry field in place or store in another gdf (which requires you to store more than just the computed field in the new gdf, which is where you had issues with your original code). Since you're exporting immediately as a SHP, I'd go with the former option:

polygons['geometry'] = polygons['geometry'].buffer(polygons['Distance'])
polygons.head()
polygons.plot()
