[GIS] Can gdal2tiles create tiles at zoom levels > 10

I am trying to create tiles from tif images using the gdal2tiles command (at the OSGeo4W command line). I've been asked if it would be possible to create tiles at zoom level 12. Using the -z switch like so …

gdal2tiles --s_srs EPSG:32717 -z 12 input_tif.tif output_folder

This creates the tiles but they are all black. I suspect this cannot be done but I'd like to confirm that I'm not just having an unrelated problem. Tiles created at 1-10 appear to be ok with most of my input files.

If you are in doubt, apply a zoom level option of --zoom 8-12 and check all resulting output folders.

It always worked for me with this option.

I just ran into this same/similar problem. What fixed my problem was to make the image large enough for the gdal2tiler to make proper tiles. I made my image evenly divisible by 256px, so this may have be necessary as well.

I initially had a 16128px wide image and was trying to create zoom levels between 0-7. The gdal2tiler worked as expected when I tiled the 16128px image at zoom levels of 0-6, but created the "mini tiles" problem when trying to create 7 zoom levels out of the 16128px image. I generated the image to a new size of 32000px. The gdal2tiler worked properly when running the 32000px image with 0-7 zoom levels.

I've found problem by myself at the end. The reason why it didn't work is because my tiles were created using gdal2tiles and they were created using TMS scheme while examples at http://tileserver.maptiler.com/#nasa/ol3 works only for tiles generated using MapTiler which renders tiles following XYZ schema. Difference between those 2 types is well explained here http://www.maptiler.org/google-maps-coordinates-tile-bounds-projection/
