I'm fairly new to QGIS and was hoping someone could help me load some MrSID photos into QGIS.
I have read some posts and have installed the OSGEO4W Installer and selected the GDAL-MRSID Lib.
I also have the GDAL plugin installed.
However, after it installed I rebooted but have the same result.
I know the .sid file is good because I can load it into MapWindow without any issues.
If you use a Mac and QGIS from KyngChaos, then download the MrSID plugin of KyngChaos: Framewoks
To read MrSID-files, you need the GDAL MrSID-plugin.
Check if you have the MrSID-plugin correctly installed by the command gdalinfo --format MrSID in your commandprompt/shell (otherwise check here).
Make sure the rgdal-package installs the GDAL with the MrSID-plugin (you might have several versions installed). Linking the rgdal package to the correct GDAL is not easy - I'm still figuring out how to do this on my system - but see here and here for some guidelines.
If this works, use the readGDAL function {rgdal package} to read your data.

Alternatively, you can use the gdal_translate function in the {gdalUtils package}. The advantage is that you can choose the GDAL version easily with gdal_setInstallation.

This is likely a case of QGIS not communicating with the correct GDAL version. You should also install QGIS through the OSGEO4W installer as well. Then run QGIS from:
C:\OSGeo4W\bin\qgis.bat
