When packaging a QGIS project for QField using QFieldSync plugin, I get the following error:
Layer does not use UTF-8, but "windows-1252" encoding.Working with layers that do not use UTF-8 encoding might cause problems.It is highly recommended to convert them to UTF-8 encoded layers.
The file is then unavailable when opening the project in QField.
How do I convert the shapefile to UTF-8 encoding?
I found the solution for the problem:
layer = self.vlayer
provider = layer.dataProvider()
layer.select(provider.attributeIndexes())
addA=[]
for elem in layer:
attrs_r = elem.attributeMap()
for (k,attr) in attrs_r.iteritems():
unicodestr = unicode(attr.toString(), "utf-8")
addA.append(unicodestr)
Now it is possible to use for example the German "Umlaute"
From the menubar, go to:
Settings > Options > Data Sources > Data source handling
and uncheck the Ignore shapefile encoding declaration setting:
This sets all layers loaded into QGIS to be default encoded to UTF-8

Right click the layer - Export as, and specify the encoding
