I have a question regarding upper and lower indices.
If I write something like
$A = \hat{\tau}^1_2$
the upper and lower indices are postponed in such a way that the lower index is a bit more left compared to the upper index.
But I want them to be among themselves.
Is that somehow possible?
You can get a decent result with
$f\hat{\mkern6mu}$
or
$f{\mathchar"5E}$
In the second case the spacing is perhaps too much; here they are side by side with a symbol after them to show the spacing
Plain TeX, and LaTeX, have a \skew macro which is described in the TeXBook.

with \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} the hat moves: it is lowered and shifted a bit to the left of its non-T1 position.
