fontssymbols
Does anybody know how to make the following symbol in LaTeX? I think it is some calligraphic \mathcal{E}.
It is not anywhere in this table and online font recognizers do not recognize it.
The general font in the book I got this symbol from, Introduction to Quantum Optics by Grynberg, is not very extraordinary: this is a formula containing the strange symbol:
The easiest way to use arbitrary TrueType and OpenType fonts is by using LuaLaTeX or XeLaTeX and fontspec (be sure to use recent versions, as these engines and the fontspec package are still under heavy development).
For example after installing the Tangerine font,
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\newfontfamily\textcal[Ligatures=TeX]{Tangerine}
\begin{document}
ABCabc \textcal{ABCabc}
\end{document}
gives

At least with a quick google search I couldn't find an otf or ttf version of Calligra, so you might have to look for a suitable font.
I have that book in .pdf version and the font is Lucida New Math (Symbols).
If you have the Lucida New Math font installed as type 1, you can go as LaRiFaRi says in the above comment.
Otherwise, you have probably Lucida Calligraphy installed as .ttf as I have.
In this case, you can use xelatex or luatex for compiling.
This is an example using that font:

\usepackage{unicode-math}
\setmathfont[range={\mathcal}]{Lucida Calligraphy}
\begin{document}

Online font matching sites suggests this symbol is from
Linoscriptfont orTypo Uprightfont. I think it is the former, as the spiral in the lower part of the E is a bit different.In the following image you can see an example of
