I am trying to add linebreaks in my table cell but found that LyX doesn't allow me to. How can I insert a newline inside a table cell?

Sure, just use \newline instead of \\:

The cell needs to be of a paragraph style: either via a p{<len>} column specification, or using a \parbox.

Using \\ alone would not help, since this is redefined inside a tabular to define a new line. Of course, depending on the context, it may also be possible to use
\begin{tabular}{ll}
Some text & Some more text \\
Here is some lengthy text & Some more text \\
with a break \\

\end{tabular}
which resembles a newline in one of the cells.

go into the menu of the tabular (right mouse click when cursor is inside the tabular) and then choose a width for the column. Then you can have linebreaks inside this cell with
\newlineor with an empty line for a new paragraph.The width setting can be found on right-click > More > Settings > Column Settings > Width (LyX 2.1.4).
