[Tex/LaTex] Indentation inside align environment in Emacs + AUCTeX

I use Emacs + AUCTeX for writing LaTeX. I want in my code to have 4 spaces of indentation so I used these in my .emacs file:

(setq LaTeX-indent-level 4) 
(setq LaTeX-item-indent 0)

Everything works fine and I have indentation of 4 spaces in itemize, enumerate, equation and gather but the indentation inside align environment remains 2 spaces. Why is that? Is this indented to happen and I need to change it manually or is it a bug?

Customize LaTeX-indent-environment-list: M-x customize-variable RET LaTeX-indent-environment-list RET and uncheck align and align*

yasnippet does just what you're looking for. Check out the documentation in the link, it's relatively painless, and easier to set up than things like skeleton, in my experience.

The snippet for your particular need would be something like this:

\begin{enumerate}[label=(\arabic*) ,leftmargin=*,align=left,topsep=\mytopsep,itemsep=\myitemsep] 
    \item $0 
    \item 
\end{enumerate}

That's fairly intuitive, I think. Once you've got it installed, the rest is easy!

BTW, once you've entered your first item, C-c C-j will automatically add the next one for you, as a built-in feature of Auctex, even without yasnippet.C-c C-e prompts you for a new environment to add, which is more general than using a snippet, but requires you to fill in the options by hand.

Nothing is wrong with your init file. You need to configure AucTeX with the option ./configure <tab>--with-emacs, then just make and sudo make install.

Of course, in a perfect world emacs ought to be compiled by the user. But either way, this is assuming that your emacs is working as it should.

As a side note, you can always (add-to-list 'load-path "~/path/to/auctex-11.87/"), verify it with C-x C-e.

The easiest way to test it out, since we are dealing with bib files, is to make a small change in the bib file, say in one of the fields of either the author, or in the title of a miscellaneous item, or article, or book or whatever, and remember to save this bib file. Then go to your tex file and invoke C-c C-c again. It should return Command: (default BibTeX).

If it does not return the above Command: (default BibTeX) immediately, then, either your emacs was not compiled as it should have been compiled, or AucTeX needs to be compiled by one of the other options as outlined in http://www.gnu.org/software/auctex/manual/auctex.html#Installation .
