[Tex/LaTex] How to install LaTeX on Fedora 15

In order to install a framework I need to install first LaTeX on a fedora 15 machine

LaTeX (optional) This is used for typesetting K definitions. Besides basic
packages, the following (texlive) packages are needed: bera, datetime, ec,
fancybox, fancyvrb, import, marginnote, microtype, ms, pdfcomment, pgf,
preview, stmaryrd, times, titlesec, ucs, url, xcolor, and xkeyval.

I tried searching with yum. But I wasn't able to locate the packages. Google didn't return much either.

Any ideas ?

Look here for an RPM packaged version of TeX Live 2010. There's also the 2011 pretest version, but it's safer to stick with the stable one.

As Alex points out the maintenance of these packages may not be always trustworthy, so it can be better to manually install TeX Live.

You should install TeXlive.

Note some distributions like Debian derived ones (e.g. ubuntu) have a version of TeXlive in the package manager. This isn't a great option: it is old and it doesn't have all the packages you might need. Installing the one via the TUG website is much better. See this blog discussion for arguments.

TeXlive comes with a variety of useful things like tlmgr for updating packages from CTAN and so on. This way you always have the most up to date packages.

What I do across my machines is to manually install TeXLive in a system neutral directory. Something like /opt (instead of /usr/local which is the default for the TeXLive installer) will do. In my Fedora machine I even have /opt in a separate partition so there is not even the need to reinstall TeXLive in case I reinstall Fedora. According to my experience I found that, even in linux distributions that package the latest TeXLive, it is easier to administer your installation through a central directory and you do not mess with the files of your distribution. Plus you get a working TeXLive package manager and you can update your TeXLive installation through it as you see fit.

For most Linux Standard Base distributions (such as Fedora) it will suffice to add a shell script in /etc/profile.d to add your TeXLive installation to the PATH so that you can have access of the TeXLive executables via the command line. For example in my Fedora machine I have created a /etc/profile.d/texlive2011.sh shell script with the following content.

texarch=`uname -m`
# TeXLive installation directory. Edit accordingly
dir=/opt/texlive/2011/bin/${texarch}-linux
# Check if $dir exists and if yes add it to the $PATH
if [ -d $dir ] ; then
   export PATH=$PATH:$dir
fi

You might need to mark it as executable (sudo chmod +x /etc/profile.d/texlive2011.sh). A logout/login might be required as well.
