Sorry, I don't know the name of this typographic effect, it's been years since I read The Elements of Typographic Style. This is more than kerning. I'm referring to the "tail" of the N going under the following letters. Or is it a particular font with this feature?

Update: as Lev Bishop indicated, the effect is called swash (wikipedia)
I only know about a non-LaTeX solution using PostScript. Because PostScript is a programming language it can randomly pick fonts while typesetting a text. A program ransom.ps using that effect was once
published by Diomidis Spinellis on Usenet. The description reads:
This is a small postscript program you can use to create ransom notes. Enter the text you want between the brackets at the beginning of the script and send the whole file to a postscript printer. The text will be printed using many different fonts, sizes, orientations, and styles. You can modify the margins and the fonts used, by modifying the source.
Executing the PostScript code ransom.ps gave me the following result:
\fontfamily{pbk}\selectfont selects that family from that point for the rest of the current group.
\renewcommand{\familydefault}{pbk} Just redefines that macro and does nothing unless something does \fontfamily{\familydefault}\selectfont. That combination isn't normally done explicitly but is part of \resetfont or \normalfont which heading commands usually use so that they get consistent fonts even if the text at that point in the document is locally using a different font style.
