Why are the square root symbols on this post different? Some of them have vertical bar and other ones have slanted bars.

This overlaps three things: wedge/vee, shortmid, and shortmid raised to a correct height. The numbers suit cm and lm fonts, for other fonts they might need to be modified.

One can use TikZ; this is a prototype with a perhaps convenient syntax where the argument to \erelbar consists of two digits (0, 1, 2, or 3):
- 0 stands for no arrowhead
- 1 stands for a normal arrowhead
- 2 stands for a bar
- 3 stands for both bar and arrowhead
The first digit refers to the left side, the second one to the right side.

That is MathJax rendering not TeX so not really on topic for this site however you would see similar from a TeX rendering.
TeX fonts have a small fixed set of square root signs (typically with slanted left bar) but then once the term reaches a certain size, TeX switches to a use a glyph for the lower part and then repeats as many "extension pieces" of a small vertical segment as needed. This last mode necessarily has a vertical left side.
