[Tex/LaTex] Aquamacs opening TexShop viewer instead of Skim

When I click View in Aquamacs after clicking Latex, it opens TexShop and a TexShop viewer. I want it to open Skim. I have set preferences to Skim as per other posts on this site. This behavior happens with some latex files but not others, meaning for some the viewer does open as Skim and for some as TexShop. Could you advise on how I can make it always be Skim? Why would it differ depending on the latex file?

As an orthogonal question, I could live with TexShop preview if it did automatic updates. From other posts I understood that for that I needed only to check the Automatic Preview Update option in the preview preferences and re-start TexShop, which I did, but when TexShop opens under Aquamacs, it will not automatically update.

I had this same problem. I have a common Dropbox with someone else. Apparently he had set the default compiler to be latex --> dvips, as opposed to pdflatex. Aquamacs called TeXShop to deal with the ps output. The problem was solved by switching to pdflatex via selecting "Generate PDF" under TeXing options in the Command menu.

I was having this same problem when I stumbled across this post. I was able to fix it the following way:

Note, I am using Emacs23.3.1, AUCTeX 11.86, Ubuntu 11.10, Gnome3.2.1

Open a .tex file (or make one). I will assume that you are using Emacs23, using an Xwindow (Mine is in Gnome). Go to the menu bar and do:

Preview -> Customize -> Browse Options

In this buffer, do:

Preview GS -> Preview GS options -> [click on the little arrow to show the options] -> del -dSAFER

C-x C-s to save, and reload Emacs. Previews should work now!

Let me explain a little more the solution suggested in my above comments. In TeXShop, you can choose which "engine" to call when pressing the Typeset button. An "Engine“ is basically a shell script which calls standard TeX commands, and sometimes much more (see the TeXShop help panel or this post for instance). In your case, modifying the pdfTeX command in the TeXShop Preferences changes the standard LaTeX engine. As a result of your modification, TeXShop cannot open the PDF preview automatically after typesetting. One way to restore this behaviour is to write a new engine.

To do so, you can simply create a shell script containing the following code

pdflatex --output-dir=/tmp "$1"
open -a TeXShop /tmp/$(echo $1 | sed 's/\(.*\)\..*/\1\.pdf/')

Make sure the execution bit is active (chmod +x), change the extension to .engine and move the script to the ~/Library/TeXShop/Engines folder. Launch TeXShop and select your new engine in the popup menu next to the Typeset button, then press Typeset.

There may be a more elegant solution, but this works.
