MATLAB: XTick Visibility off with XTickLabel showing

Question

Is there a way to specify the XTick property without showing the actual tick so that I can have labels at the XTick locations on the axeis?

I have several axes that are overlayed so that I can get the TickDir for the x axis of axes1 on the outside but I cannot figure out how to keep the XTickLabel on the other axes, axes2, while setting

get( axes2, 'XTick', [] );

This just turns off the XTick altogether. If there is no way to do this, then maybe I can set the labels using text and a for loop?
