My java script attempts to import classes from the com package: import com.mathworks.engine.*; However, I can't find the path to the package in my R2017b installation.

extern/engines/java/jar/engine.jar in matlabroot()
It would help if you used the documentation that come with your version. In R2016a, you will find no mention of the java engine, and that's because it's been introduced in R2016 (See therelease notes under advanced software development).
