MATLAB: Restore open files in Editor from previous sessions

I often use multiple MATLAB sessions simultaneously to work on different aspects of my project. Each instance has a unique set of files that I use together and work on together. Typically when I close a session and then re-open MATLAB, the same files will be open in the Editor.

However, when I close all 3 sessions and then open up 3 new sessions, they all contain the files from my last-closed session. Is there any way to workaround this? Is there any way to choose which files to restore?

There is no functionality within MATLAB to get the above behavior at this time. However, there is a submission on the File Exchange which customers have used in the past to attain this functionality:

In particular, you can save an open session (Open files in the Editor & Current Folder) with the following syntax:

>> editorLayout.SessionEditor.saveSession( 'NameOfNewSession' );

Then you can switch to a different, previously saved session using the command:

>> editorLayout.SessionEditor.openSession();

Note that MathWorks did not author these documents and any questions regarding the contents or functionality should be directed towards the author of the files.

You can use the "findall" function and 'TMWWaitbar' as the 'tag' input to get handles to all the waitbars:

>>F = findall(0,'type','figure','tag','TMWWaitbar')

and then delete all of them:

>> delete(F)

The ability to preserve the directory between sessions is not available in MATLAB.

To work around this issue, you may use finish.m to have MATLAB use the last directory and use that upon starting a new session. The finish.m file would store the pathname of the last directory into your user path.

The finish.m file would include the lines:

p = pwd;
userpath(p);
savepath;

Note that the command FINISH automatically executes before leaving MATLAB if the file finish.m exists on the path. More information on this functionality can be found in the documentation by typing

doc finish

Alternatively, it is possible to use startup.m and finish.m files in order to have MATLAB remember the last directory and use that upon starting a new session. The finish.m file would store the pathname of the last directory into a variable, and the startup.m file would load this variable and use its contents to determine what to change the current directory to.

The startup.m file would include the lines

if (exist([matlabroot filesep 'work' filesep 'last_dir.mat']) == 2) 
      load ([matlabroot filesep 'work' filesep 'last_dir']) 
      cd(last_dir); 
end

whereas the finish.m file would include the lines

last_dir = pwd; 
save([matlabroot filesep 'work' filesep 'last_dir'],'last_dir');

Note that the command STARTUP automatically executes when starting MATLAB if the file startup.m exists, and the command FINISH automatically executes before leaving MATLAB if the file finish.m exists. More information on this functionality can be found in the documentation by typing
