MATLAB R2016b is compatible with macOS Sierra. Earlier versions of MATLAB may work but we do not guarantee full compatibility with these releases.
Furthermore, there are a few incompatibilities to be aware of when running MATLAB on macOS Sierra.
Language & Region issues in MATLAB
When using certain Language & Region combinations, MATLAB may fail to load an appropriate character encoding for your locale. This can result in the MATLAB user interface displaying in a language different than expected. This may also cause text files to be corrupted when loading and saving.
For more information about this incompatibility, see the following article on MATLAB Answers:
Language & Region issues in MATLAB Compiler and MATLAB Runtime
The issues with Language & Region also affect MATLAB Compiler and MATLAB Runtime. See the following article for more information:
Xcode 8 compatibility
Xcode 8 is not supported with MATLAB R2016b. MEX should be able to find Xcode 8 as a supported compiler, however we cannot guarantee that everything will work as expected when using MATLAB with Xcode 8.
No support for tabs
Apple added system-wide support for tabbed document windows in macOS Sierra. MATLAB does not currently support this feature.
